• Do You Like Green Eggs and Ham?

Posted by Angela Schuster on 3/1/2019

This week was Read Across America Spirit Week so we joined in by celebrating Dr. Suess today with a Suessical menu!

We had a lot of fun with this!

    Green eggs & ham

We weren't sure how many students would brave the green eggs but to our surprise, we almost sold out!

We had fresh veggies direct from the Vipper himself.

The Bar-Ba-Loots delivered a delicious frozen fruit treat, 100% juice made from the fruit of their Truffula trees.

We had some "fishy" graham crackers...

and even the Cat in the Hat got in on the action.

It was fun watching the kid's reactions, deciding whether they wanted to try it or not.

    Teacher's tried it, too!

Our ladies worked hard to make this a fun and special treat!

  • 2019 District 5 Chopped Competition

Posted by Angela Schuster on 2/6/2019

Congratulations to Wyatt, Andrea, and Sarah Ann! These three were selected to represent our school at the District 5 Chopped Competion which took place at the CATE Center. (Center for Advanced Technical Studies)

    d5 ready

Our team arrived at their work stations and put on aprons and chef hats. They received their instructions including finally finding out the three mystery ingredients: Shredded Rotisserie Chicken, Collard Greens, and Blueberries. The team could make whatever they wanted as long as it included those three items. Everybody was excited and nervous but when the timer started they jumped right into action deciding what to make and dividing up the responsibilities. They had 45 minutes to prepare 5 plates.

WLTX New 19 was there! Also, Chef Duggan walked around dispensing tips and hints as well as some of his culinary students from the CATE Center.

Sarah Ann worked diligently chopping many delicious fruits for a fruit salad that she combined with vanilla yogurt and granola, then topped with the blueberries. She even added lemon juice to ensure the apples and bananas didn't turn brown.

Wyatt was all about his chicken quesadilla! He heated the chicken with salsa. Then he combined the chicken with cheddar cheese between two tortillas and grilled it in a bit of butter.

Andrea took over the challenging task of preparing collard greens. These can be tricky and she was a bit nervous because she had never made them before but she did great! She cooked them with chopped onions, chicken bouillon, Mrs. Dash seasoning and a bit of salt and pepper.

When they finished cooking they began plating the food.

They finished with 5 minutes to spare!

The four judges each tasted the food. Our Superintendant, Dr. Christina Melton gave her comments. She especially enjoyed the collards since she doesn't normally care for them but she said these she would eat! She was also impressed with their teamwork.

Great job you guys! I had so much fun working with you! Don't forget to check out this coverage of the competion by WLTX News 19!

  • Lexington/Richland District 5 Culinary Cooking Contest

Posted by Angela Schuster on 4/28/2017

Three of our students entered the 2017 Fifth Grade Lexington/Richland District 5 Culinary "Chopped" Competition! Each team had a high school senior culinary arts consultant. Our helper was Dominic who recently participated in the State Competition.  Our students were Avery, Dakota and Nicole, overseen by our Student Nutrition Manager, Pam Rochester.

The kids had 45 minutes to prepare a meal using four mystery ingredients and had to make enough for a panel of three judges to taste and one for display. They were very excited that one of the judges was local Fox News Anchor/Reporter Brian McConchie!

They did such a great job and had a lot of fun!

All four tv stations were there and I was especially impressed with how well they did even with all the cameras and judges looking on and asking questions.

    Even the parents were watching!

When they were finishing up, they had to plate the food and present it to the judges.

Beautiful! They did such a great job.

    its time

Derek Phillips, Public Information Specialist, interviewed the kids. The had to explain what they made and what ingredients they used. When he asked Nicole what her favorite part was, she said, "getting to meet Brian!"

We won 3rd place with only one point separating the top three spots! Excellent job!
