School District Five contracts with the Lexington and Richland County Sheriff’s Departments for SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER, TRAFFIC DEPUTY, and CROSSING GUARD services during the school day. The SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS are sworn Deputy Sheriff’s with either the Lexington or Richland County Sheriff’s Departments. All School Resource Officers are highly qualified and trained Law Enforcement Officers with full police powers and authority. School Resource Officers in South Carolina also have police authority anywhere in South Carolina for certain “school sponsored events or trips”. Area Deputies, Police Officers, and Private Security Officers are also hired to provide security services for after-school functions, directed patrols, graduations, and special events.
Under the Incident Command System, the District Specialist responds to significant school emergencies and crisis incidents, and serves as the School District’s Emergency Manager and coordinates with School Administrators, County and State Emergency Managers, Public Safety, and Non-Governmental Organizations (e.g., Weather services, Red Cross, Nuclear Plant, etc.).
The District Specialist is also responsible for coordinating many other functions including managing district-wide radio communications, repair, and maintenance, internal investigations, safety training and emergency information bulletins, management of emergency plans, drills, and exercises.
