Three District Five students receive national recognition for science projects

IRMO – Three students from District Five have been nationally recognized among the Top 10% in the United States for their science projects. Peter von Ahn of Chapin Middle School, Sullivan French of CrossRoads Intermediate School and Lauren Chen of Dutch Fork Middle School were all selected as 2016 nominees for the Broadcom MASTERS national middle school science competition.

“Petey did an amazing job with all aspects of his science project,” Chapin seventh grade science teacher Gayle Brinkman said. “He is a very dedicated student and he values his education as his overall grades show his amazing effort.”

When asked about Lauren’s nomination, Dutch Fork Middle School principal Dr. Gerald Gary was thrilled saying, “Lauren exemplifies what is best about Dutch Fork Middle School. She goes above and beyond and always strives for excellence as evidenced by her amazing science project. Her Dutch Fork family is very proud of her.”

“CrossRoads is so proud of Sullivan and his continued success,” CrossRoads Intermediate School principal Jess Hutchinson said. “Sullivan is an amazing young man who has a true thirst for learning and academic success. It’s no surprise to me that he is being recognized for his science fair project on a national level.”

The top 300 semifinalists will be announced via email on September 6th and the top 30 finalists will be announced on September 20th. The thirty finalists each win a trip to Washington, D.C. where they will compete in hands-on science activities for the chance to win trips to STEM summer camps, iPads, and monetary prizes of up to $25,000.

Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engingeering Rising Stars) is the premier science and engineering competition for middle school students. SSP (Society for Science & the Public) affiliated science fairs around the country nominate the top 10% of sixth, seventh and eighth grade participants to enter this prestigious competition.
