Chapin High School varsity cheer wins Class 5A state championship for second year in a row
IRMO – Chapin High School varsity cheer won the South Carolina High School League Class 5A Division II state championship on November 23 at the Colonial Life Arena.
For the first time, Class 5A held two championships for Divisions I and II.
Chapin finished with 331.5 points ahead of St. James High School’s 306 points. Irmo High School finished in 8th place in Class 5A Division II. Dutch Fork High finished in 6th place in the Class 5A Division I.
This is the 18th state title for Chapin Cheerleading. This is coach Vicki Williams’ 17th state title at Chapin.
The team decided on a “Top Gun” theme this year. Top Gun pilots are the “Best of the Best” due to their training and focus, which is exactly what you have to do in competitive cheer.
“The team this year was composed of 24 amazing athletes who had one mission: To win another State Title,” Williams said. “The level of difficulty was increased to get the difficulty points on the score sheet - but to get the execution points it took hours and hours of practice. My daughter Billie and I are so proud of this team, their strong work ethic and their commitment to excellence on the mat!”
Since competitive cheer became a sport, Chapin is the only high school cheer team to win state titles in 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A divisions.
“I am so proud of this team and the coaches,” Chapin High School Principal Ed Davis said. “Their hard work and commitment to excellence made this possible. This is an awesome achievement for Chapin High School, the community, and our district! We aRe CHAPIN!”
