Irmo Middle School earns recertification as a Green Steps School
IRMO – Irmo Middle School has earned recertification as a Green Step School through the Green Steps program with the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina (EEASC).
Irmo Middle School has been a certified Green Steps School for 8 years. They earned their recertification by establishing and maintaining model quality sustainability projects. There are three main project categories- Conserve, Protect, and Restore. Irmo Middle School students and staff have worked with community mentors to successfully implement at least two projects in each of these categories.
“We owe a lot to the driving forces behind our Green Steps success to Mrs. Cameran Davenport and Mr. Will Green. They motivate students to want to do more in being stewards of our natural environment,” Principal Mansa Joseph said. “At Irmo Middle School we feel that our Green Steps work is essential in our efforts to love and grow our students. We do this work through all grade levels and our Hive program."
Irmo Middle School is one of only a few schools statewide to earn 3 out of 4 superlative awards for Conserve (2024), Restore (2023) and Overall School of the Year (2019).
The Green Steps program encourages individual schools in South Carolina to take annual steps toward becoming more environmentally responsible. Developed by Keep the Midlands Beautiful, Sonoco Recycling, and South Carolina Department of Public Health’s Office of Recycling, Green Steps began in the 2003-2004 school year with seven Midlands schools participating.
