Nursery Road Elementary School Receives Grant from South Carolina Department of Education

IRMO –Nursery Road Elementary School-Arts Magnet (NRES-AM) has received a $12,400 Distinguished Arts Program (DAP) grant for the project Excellence in Arts at Nursery Road Elementary Integration from the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE). DAP grants provide funds for one-year projects and funds from this grant award must be expended in accordance with activities to support standards-based arts instruction.

"At Nursery Road, we believe that every child is an artist, with unique talents waiting to be discovered and celebrated,” said Nursery Road Elementary School Principal Karey Fisher. “This grant from the South Carolina Department of Education fuels our commitment to empowering young minds through the arts, igniting creativity, confidence, and curiosity in each student.”

Nursery Road Elementary - Arts Magnet utilizes an arts-integrated curriculum that extends into all aspects of a student’s learning experience. Related Arts classrooms transform into vibrant studios that incite creativity and collaboration in the teaching and learning process. The studios set the foundation for whole-school integration of the arts. The Arts magnet school is also the only elementary school in Lexington-Richland School District Five to offer Media, Visual, and Performing Arts with an extended arts rotation as well as Arts Integration in the general education classroom.

“It is quite a tribute to Nursery Road Elementary School - Arts Magnet that they are the recipient of the DAP grant, said School District Five Magnet Director Sara Wheeler. “It supports their magnet school mission of quality arts education programs that improve student achievement.”

DAP grants assist schools in developing and implementing arts initiatives that support quality arts education programs that significantly improve student achievement in the arts. DAP grants provide funds for one-year projects. Successful DAP applications must indicate in the strategic arts plan that the applicant will include all arts forms—dance, music, theatre, and visual arts—over a three-year period of their strategic arts plan.
