IRMO – Chapin High School student athlete Summit Wood won the Class 5A Division II Region 4 Championship in Cross Country. The event was held at Lexington High School on November 2.

Wood has had a stellar senior cross country season. He finished number one for Chapin in a majority of the contests this season. He came in first place overall at the Trojan Invitational and the Lake Murray Invitational in which he won by 0.06 seconds.

On Thursday, November 21st Summit competed along with his team at the 5A Division II State Championship in which he came in 3rd place earning him a bronze medal finish and helping his team finish overall in 3rd place.

Wood said, “Something I’ve learned throughout this season is that it’s not about the destination of your goals, but it’s about surrounding yourself with people who you love throughout the journey of them.”

Wood’s coach Ryan Plexico said Wood has been a leader on the team this year and it has been a privilege to be his coach.

“Summit decided one day that he wanted to be the best,” Plexico said. “He has put in the work and is dedicated to his sport. He is disciplined, has sacrificed, and has far out performed any expectation I’ve had for an athlete.”
