School District Five students participate in Palmetto Boys State and Palmetto Girls State
IRMO – Thirty-Three Lexington-Richland School District Five students recently participated in a one-week leadership and citizenship training program through The American Legion Department of South Carolina, Palmetto Girls State and Palmetto Boys State.
School District Five students in attendance for Palmetto Girls State June 8-14 at Presbyterian College included: Elanore Brownfield (Chapin High), McRae Delbridge (Dutch Fork High), Julie Drinkwalter (Dutch Fork High), Emma Easterline (Chapin High), Joya Evans (Irmo High), Haylee Flowers (Dutch Fork High), Sarah Hogan (Chapin High), Reyben Jennings (Irmo High), Jennifer Kujawa (Chapin High), Anna Murphy (Dutch Fork High), Logan Rice (Irmo High), Grace Tharp (Spring Hill High), Caroline Wahrmund (Dutch Fork High), and Anna Yeh (Spring Hill High).
School District Five students in attendance for Palmetto Boys State June 8-14 at Anderson University included: Logan Barilla (Chapin High), Adriel Brown (Dutch Fork High), David Brown (Chapin High), Evan DeMasi (Dutch Fork High), Logan DiLorenzo (Spring Hill High), Jacob DiMaria (Spring Hill High), William Farmer (Chapin High), Calvert Franklin (Chapin High), Wilkes Higginbotham (Chapin High), Christopher Mobley (Dutch Fork High), Chaz Riley (Spring Hill High), Kenneth Scarborough (Spring Hill High), Issac Shine (Dutch Fork High), Maxwell Stebbins (Chapin High), Darby Taylor (Spring Hill High), Jackson Taylor (Spring Hill High), John Warnock (Chapin High), Caleb Warren (Spring Hill High), and Tucker Williams (Irmo High).
The leadership programs aim to educate outstanding high school students about state and local government and citizenship. The delegates, who are rising seniors in high school, are selected for the program based on the leadership skills and involvement they have shown in their respective schools and communities. Attendees experience governmental procedure by simulating political campaigns, elections, and the political process, while learning about the principles of citizenship and public service from guest speakers, expert panels and staff members.
The South Carolina Department of the American Legion Auxiliary has organized and administered Palmetto Girls State since 1947 and Palmetto Boys State since 1940.
