H. E. Corley Elementary earns recertification as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School

IRMO – H. E. Corley Elementary School has received recertification as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School by FranklinCovey Education. The Lighthouse recertification is valid for two years beginning January 27, 2026.

The re-certification reflects the school’s dedication to and effectiveness in teaching leadership principles, fostering a leadership culture and aligning academic systems through student-led achievement and empowering instruction.

“Being recertified as a Lighthouse School is an incredible honor and a moment of great pride for our entire school community,” H. E. Corley Principal Melanie Harris said. “This recognition reflects the unwavering commitment, heart, and intentional work of our faculty and staff, who bring leadership to life each day through our systems, instruction, and school culture. We are deeply committed to creating an environment where every student is empowered to lead, grow, and make a meaningful impact. This milestone not only celebrates where we are, but also reinforces our shared purpose—cultivating confident leaders and responsible members of society who understand their worth, their potential, and the difference they can make.”

Leader in Me is the guiding principle and organizing framework for H. E. Corley’s Leadership Magnet.  The Leadership Magnet started at H. E. Corley in 2012 and uses FranklinCovey’s Leader in Me whole-school transformative model process. It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. Leader in Me is based on Steven R. Covey’s book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and the FranklinCovey training by the same name.  The seven habits incorporate principles of personal and interpersonal effectiveness such as responsibility, vision, integrity, teamwork and collaboration.

The Lighthouse Certification is a highly-regarded standard set by FranklinCovey Education that is attainable by every Leader in Me school. As it is a significant benchmark, applying for this certification typically occurs three to five years after a school begins the Leader in Me process.
