School District Five Launches Dual Enrollment Sophomore Associates Pathway
IRMO – Lexington-Richland School District Five is expanding opportunities for students to earn college credentials while still in high school through the launch of a new Dual Enrollment Sophomore Associates Degree Pathway, made possible through a partnership with Midlands Technical College (MTC).
An information session for families will be held on February 11 at 6:00 p.m. at the Center for Advanced Technical Studies located at 916 Mt. Vernon Church Road in Chapin to learn more about the program and eligibility.
Beginning next school year, the innovative program will allow selected rising sophomores to begin working toward an Interdisciplinary Associate of Arts Degree while completing their high school diploma. Students will take college-level coursework at MTC’s Harbison Campus while remaining connected to their high school experience in District Five.
“This partnership represents an important step in creating clear, accelerated pathways for students to reach their academic and career goals,” said Dual Enrollment Program Lead Dr. Tim Swick. “By starting college coursework as early as sophomore year, students can save time, reduce college costs, and graduate better prepared for the future.”
The Sophomore Associates Degree Program is open to rising sophomores, with a minimum cohort of 12 students and a maximum of 24 students selected through an application process that includes an essay and a recommendation. Courses will remain tuition-free through the SC Tuition Assistance Program via lottery funds. However, families may potentially be responsible for textbooks/supplies.
Classes will be scheduled during students’ 2nd and 6th blocks and/or 3rd and 7th blocks, allowing participants to balance high school courses with college instruction and transportation to MTC will be provided. The three-year program spans students’ sophomore, junior, and senior years and includes required summer participation.
Additional information about the program, eligibility, and the application process is available at www.lexrich5.org/dualenrollment.
