School District Five Schools Participate in SC IB Day of Service Focused on Health and Well-Being
IRMO –February 11 marked South Carolina’s first-ever IB Day of Service, a statewide initiative highlighting the International Baccalaureate (IB) mission of developing caring, future-focused citizens. The IB is an internationally recognized educational framework that emphasizes critical thinking, service, and global awareness. This year’s Day of Service was organized by SCIBS, the South Carolina IB Conference, and encouraged IB schools across the state to engage in service projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
With a shared focus on United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #3, Good Health and Well-Being, Irmo High School International School for the Arts and authorized IB School since 2004, assembled and donated art kits for patients at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital, using creativity as a way to support emotional well-being and healing for young patients. Rooted in the IB mission of developing caring, service-minded global citizens, this initiative allowed students at Irmo High to turn compassion into action by providing children with a meaningful outlet for self-expression, comfort, and joy during their hospital stay. In IB, students learn to lead with compassion and take action. This initiative reflects that mission by turning empathy into something tangible and placing hope into the hands of children who need it most.
At Seven Oaks Elementary Global Magnet, an IB candidate school, fifth-grade students took an inquiry-based approach to well-being. Students researched the impact of stress on adolescents and explored healthy coping strategies. To put their learning into action, they organized a “Bound Ball” tournament designed to promote physical activity, teamwork, and fun while raising awareness of mental and physical health. The event also supported United Nations Goal #16, Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, by emphasizing fair play, cooperation, and respectful interactions. Their game was featured on their school's weekly news show to bring attention to the importance of exercise and joy to reduce stress. Together, these projects showcased how IB learners of all ages can take action to support well-being in their communities while thinking globally.
