School District Five wrestlers win State Championships

IRMO – Several School District Five student athletes were crowned state champions during the South Carolina High School League wrestling individual State Championships held February 21-22 at the Florence Civic Center.

Dutch Fork High School senior athlete Jackson Stocker won the Class 5A, 132-pound division. It was his first State Championship after he placed runner-up in 2023 and 2024. He has been wrestling for 12 years, 5 years with Dutch Fork programs.

“The championship is simply a byproduct of who Jackson is and how he chooses to live every day and I couldn’t be prouder,” Dutch Fork Wrestling Coach Bryan Bush said. “Jackson is relentless, disciplined, and extremely competitive, but what truly sets him apart is his commitment to serving others and leading the right way. After missing an entire season due to injury, he returned grateful for every practice, every match, and every opportunity to compete. He understands that winning a state title takes discipline, dedication, sacrifice, accountability, and gratitude, for both the good days and the difficult ones. Jackson’s focus was never just on himself, but on leaving Dutch Fork wrestling better than he found it. He is one of the greatest to ever come through our program and one of the best competitors this state has seen.”

Chapin High School senior Grace Jumper finished in third place in the 140-pound division.

"I am so proud of Grace and the terrific work ethic she exemplified this season,” Chapin High School Wrestling Coach Mason Marshall said. “She is consistently one of the hardest workers in the room and always looking for places she can improve. Grace is set to start flight school in June and I'm excited to see what her future holds.”

At Irmo Middle School, Gage Brusin won the 285-pound division and London Kyle was runner up in her weight class for the middle school invitational as well. The Middle School State Championship was held January 24th.

"I am proud of all the hard work we put in this season," Irmo High School Wrestling Coach Bradley Prince said. "DeMirion, Gage, and London all showed a ton of progress this season, and I cannot state enough how proud of them I am. Wrestlers are built differently, and are able to push themselves incredibly hard.  Most people have no idea the amount of dedication it takes to perform well at this level."

Despite a slow start to the season, Dutch Fork Middle School’s wrestling team worked hard this year and accomplished a conference championship. "Under Coach Tyvion Shannon’s leadership, the team learned that success comes from daily discipline, effort, and belief in the process," Coach Bryan Bush said. "Winning is always meaningful, but what mattered most was how they came together as a team and held each other to a higher standard."
