School District Five students take part in American Legion Palmetto Boys and Girls State programs
IRMO – Thirty-three Lexington-Richland School District Five students recently participated in a one-week leadership and citizenship training program through The American Legion Department of South Carolina, Palmetto Girls State and Palmetto Boys State.
School District Five students in attendance for Palmetto Girls State June 9-15 at Presbyterian College included: Emily Carroll (Chapin High), Ella Carson (Chapin High), Erika Duncan (Spring Hill High), Mary Dunn (Chapin High), Hollis Head (Dutch Fork High), Ciara Moorer (Irmo High), Katherine Pinkney (Dutch Fork High), Lincoln Rhodan (Irmo High), Moriah Ross (Dutch Fork High), Karleigh Smith (Spring Hill High), Peyton Tapp (Irmo High), and Jessica Wang (Dutch Fork High).
School District Five students in attendance for Palmetto Boys State June 9-15 at Anderson University included: Bryson Amick (Spring Hill High), Langston Barilla (Spring Hill High), Matthew Blocker (Irmo High), Edward Bonavilla (Spring Hill High), Brady Chavis (Spring Hill High), Isaiah Dickson (Spring Hill High), Jacob Klutz (Dutch Fork High), Preston Kunkle (Chapin High), James Lewis (Chapin High), Paulo Lombardi (Spring Hill High), Benson Lominack (Chapin High), Rollins McClure (Chapin High), Banks McGlohorn (Chapin High), Brodie Othersen (Chapin High), Roddy Owen (Spring Hill High), Andrew Phelps (Chapin High), William Robinson (Spring Hill High), Logan Rollins (Dutch Fork High), Tillman Smith (Spring Hill High), Corbin Urch (Dutch Fork High), and Asher Wokurka (Spring Hill High).
The leadership programs aim to educate outstanding high school students about state and local government and citizenship. The delegates, who are rising seniors in high school, are selected for the program based on the leadership skills and involvement they have shown in their respective schools and communities. Attendees experience governmental procedure by simulating political campaigns, elections, and the political process, while learning about the principles of citizenship and public service from guest speakers, expert panels and staff members.
The South Carolina Department of the American Legion Auxiliary has organized and administered Palmetto Girls State since 1947 and Palmetto Boys State since 1940.
