Every Child Has a Right to an Education
The McKinney-Vento Act ensures that children and youth experiencing homelessness have equal access to free, appropriate public education - including preschool.
Who Qualifies?
A student may qualify for McKinney-Vento services if they are lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, including:
- Sharing housing due to economic hardship (doubled-up)
- Staying in motels, hotels, or campgrounds
- Living in emergency or transitional shelters
- Sleeping in cars, parks, or abandoned buildings
- Unaccompanied youth in any of the above situations
Student Rights
- Immediate enrollment, without proof of residence
- Remain at school of origin after losing housing
- Automatic Free and Reduced Lunch
- Transportation to and from school and actitivies
- Equal access to al programs and services
- Confidentiality - your information is protected
Available Services
- Transportation
- District Pantry (food, clothing, hygiene)
- Fee Reduction or Elimination
- Enrichment and Tutoring Programs
- Referrals to Legal and Medical Agencies
- Rehousing Assistance
- Childcare Vouchers
- Document Recovery Assistance
