"Education is not preparation for life; it is life itself." ~ John Dewey

I received my Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Carolina which is now also endorsed as a Reading Specialist.  I am a National Board Certified Teacher in Language and Literacy and also hold a Master's Degree in the same field.  I was blessed to be named the Distinguished Elementary Reading Teacher of the Year (2011-12) for Irmo Elementary, Lexington/Richland School District 5 and for the Columbia Chapter of the South Carolina International Reading Association.

I love living the writerly life and sharing that with my students!  I've had the great pleasure of co-writing a children's book with Peter Buttress.  "Chase Gets a Penpal" is a wonderful story detailing how a therapy dog motivates a young girl to live a life of appreciation and service.  Click here to read more about it:

I truly believe that learning is a lifelong and joyful process.  I am a very happy teacher AND student!  I love, love, love to read and have developed an obsession with my Kindle!   However, my two favorite things on the planet are children and trees -- and I enjoy watching both grow and blossom!

I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and have learned to substitute "y'all" for "eh"! Bill and I have been married for 35 years and raised 3 children.  We are also now happily known as "Nana" and "Papa" to two grandchildren.  We've also lived in Saskatchewan, Atlanta, and Denver and fell in love with the prairies, mountains and the south!  I am also the proud daughter of Jean Mallon and the late John Mallon who were born and raised in Northern Ireland.  Although my immediate family lives in Toronto, Canada, I have a very large and happy extended family in Ireland, Australia, and the U.S.

Most importantly, I am completely enamored with and in awe of young students!  Their big hearts and minds are a constant inspiration.
