Welcome, Students and Parents!
My name is Michaela Easterling and I teach 5th grade English and US History. I am very excited to have the opportunity to teach your child for the 2017-2018 school year. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have been married to my husband Jack for 15 years, and we have two girls, Savannah and Sophie Jane. We also have a black lab named Luna. My family loves all things music! In fact, our oldest daughter, Savannah, had the opportunity to open up for a Fireflies Game this summer by singing the National Anthem!
I received my Associates of Arts degree from Midlands Technical College, and my Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College (Home of the Fighting Koalas!) I have taught grades 3, 4, and 5, but have always had a passion for fifth grade. In fact, it was my very favorite year as a student! Before joining the CIS team when it opened, I taught fifth grade next door at CES.
Fifth grade is a year of transitions, as we work to prepare them for middle and high school, so changing classes is a big part of that. Your student will learn to a balance multiple classes taught by multiple teachers. I work very hard to teach my students to be responsible and accountable for their own work-- it's a skill they'll need in the real world, so I challenge them to take action and come to me when they need something, email me when they forgot an assignment, and do their best to meet all deadlines. We are preparing our students to be productive citizens in the world someday, so let's give them those opportunities to learn how to do so. Please know that I truly have my students' best interest at heart, and I'm always looking for new strategies to make me more successful in reaching my students. Using music and movement to get students engaged and involved is a big part of that! Thank you for being an integral part of your child's success here at CIS! It's going to be a fantastic year!
