Mrs. Garris and Ms. Currie

Welcome to Chapin Elementary School and our class website!    My name is Sandy Garris and I have been teaching young children on and off for almost four decades!  After graduating from the University of South Carolina with a BA and a MA in Early Childhood Education, I began my teaching career as a kindergarten teacher at Dutch Fork Elementary School.  I taught there for many years and then stayed home for a few years to raise my two sons.  Since returning to the classroom I have taught first grade at HE Corley Elementary and I have spent the rest of my time here at Chapin Elementary teaching across the grade levels.  I have two sons who both went to CES.  My oldest is a high school history teacher in Charleston and my youngest is a senior at USC.  I love to garden, feed birds, cook, read, and spend time with my cats.

Ms. Stacy Currie is my instructional assistant.  She has worked as an instructional assistant for many years at CES and both of her daughters went to CES, too. Ms. Currie loves to fish, enjoys lake life, and spending time with her family and dogs.

It is our philosophy to teach the whole child.  By teaching the whole child, we are addressing their social, emotional, physical cognitive, and sensory needs through a developmental approach.  This is VERY important to us.   Learning should be enjoyable, meaningful and the LEAST stressful environment for your child.  Although kindergarten children share a chronological age, their developmental age varies greatly.  It is the developmental age that is most important because it tells us what your child is ready and not ready to do.

It is with these thoughts in mind that we actively involve our kindergarten students in the learning process.  We do this by providing our students with many opportunities to express themselves, make discoveries, solve problems, and interact with their environment through play.  This will allow each child to develop mentally, physically, and emotionally at the rate that is most comfortable.

We promise to love, respect, have fun with, play with, listen to, and make a difference in the life of your child.
