Ms. Jane Johns
My name is Jane Johns. I have had the pleasure of teaching students at Nursery Road Elementary-AM in Reading Book Clubs since 2016. I work with students from Kindergarten to Fifth grade and each day it is a new experience. It is amazing how much I am learning from our children!
My education began at the University of South Carolina in Spartanburg, South Carolina where I received a B.A. in Early Childhood Education and a cognate in Spanish. I continued to pursue my Masters in Reading at the University of South Carolina while teaching Kindergarten in Union County Schools.
In 1990, I received certification as a Reading Recovery Teacher Leader from Clemson University, after a yearlong training that included traveling to Ohio State University. My instructors included renowed literary leaders such as Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnel, Dr. Diane Deford, and Dr. Joe Yukish. This certification allowed me to train teachers in a program called Reading Recovery.
While working for Clemson University, the S.C. Department of Education, and Union County Schools, a consortia was created and we began our efforts in training teachers in various counties across the state of South Carolina. This was a program that based it teachings on the theory and practice of how children learn to read. We know that all children do not learn the same, and so this intervention allowed us to teach to the needs of each child.
In 2000,while continuing to teach children in small groups, I received National Board Certification and within that year, I began working for the S.C. Department of Education fulltime and served in various positions such as a Regional Literacy Coach in the S.C. Reading Initiative, SCREADS, and Reading First. I also served as one of 4 on the SC Response to Intervention team (RTI).
In 2016, I made a decision to focus on teaching children exclusively again, and to partner with the students and staff at Nursery Road Elementary-AM. It was one of the best choices of my career. It's empowering to see how contagious the smiles and energy are on a daily basis here at NRES-AM. Serving our children is as much about building relationships as it is teaching them how to read and write. It is has been so rewarding to have this experience at NRES-AM. Our children are AMAZING!!!
