Degrees and Certifications:

Mr. Joseph Chapman

Dear Students and Parents:

Welcome to my website.  I teach Law Enforcement Services (Year 1) at the Center for Advanced Technical Studies.  This is my third year teaching Law Enforcement full-time in the public school system.  I have a degree in Criminal Justice and Criminology from the University of South Carolina.  I grew up in Irmo and have spent nearly my entire life living in the surrounding area.

In 2006, I was sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and worked there in multiple capacities through August of 2017.  While at the Richland County Sheriff’s Department I worked as court security, a road patrol deputy, a road patrol supervisor, a Field Training Officer, and an Instructor.  My last four years were as an Instructor in the Training Division where I lead the New Hire and Field Training Programs, worked with the Citizen’s Academy, In-Service Training, Advanced Tactical Training, Tactical Evaluations of major incidents and assisted in other areas as well.  I was a part of our emergency Incident Command Team and Mobile Field Force Unit.  I have obtained over 30 law enforcement related certifications to including 13 instructor certifications (8 of which are national/federal instructor certifications).  After leaving the Sheriff's Department, I stayed on as a Reserve Deputy from August 2017-September 2018.

In addition to teaching at the Center, I am also a part of the Education and Business Summit Planning Committee, a part of our school's Medical Response Team, and this past year I was named the Lead Advisor for SkillsUSA Center for Advanced Technical Studies Chapter (A student-school-industry partnered organization focused on preparing students for their future careers).

I am honored to have the opportunity to teach our future generation of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice personnel.  It is an honorable profession with fantastic opportunities.
