Welcome Message from our Principal, Thomas "Dr. T" Turner
I want to start by articulating the theme and direction of Harbison West for the 2023-24 school year. This year, our focus is to "Be the HERO of Your Story." Within this theme, we will continue to uphold and promote our school values of being a HERO (Hard-working, Empathetic, Respectful and Open-Minded). It is important that everyone recognizes there is a "hero" in all of us. This year, I encourage everybody to embrace and explore their personal unique traits, gifts, and skills and champion those each day. I believe that diversity is a source of strength. When we all feel comfortable being who we are individually, we will create a better community. As we live our daily lives, sometimes we encounter challenges. These challenges could be in the form of academics, social emotional, mental health, and/or access to resources. Perspective is important. Therefore, it is vital for us to not view these items as challenges, but opportunities to be resilient and overcome obstacles. This leads to our "why". When we shift our mind to view challenges as opportunities, it connects our "why" with a purpose. Our purpose powers our daily activities and gives us conviction to carry out our daily tasks to the best of our ability. When we do that on a consistent basis, you become the hero of "your" story. At Harbison West, we are a family. Your success is our success. Consequently, when you become the hero of "your" story, you automatically become the hero of "our" story. In order to successfully do that, you give your personal best in the moment. No matter if that is participating in class, independent reading, taking a test, collaborating over homework, or practicing self-care, you do it to the best of your ability. These small successes on a daily basis will make a substantial win in the long run, and help us all be the HERO of "our" story. This is our theme and direction for the 2023-24 school year!
This year, we have exciting plans and initiatives in place to enhance the learning experience at Harbison West and focus on enhancing our climate and culture. These initiatives will include a House Competition called "Whose House". This is a friendly competition between grade levels where we compete against each other to see who can produce the most positivity per nine weeks. We also plan to have monthly award winners, which will include our HERO champions, Math masters, and ELA masters. These awards will be distributed each month during the Live Morning News Show. Our goal is to provide a well-rounded education that nurtures the academic, social and emotional growth of each student.
