Degrees and Certifications:
Mr. Secaida Howell
My name is Secaida Howell and I am the new Director of Bands at Chapin Middle School and Assistant Director of The Chapin High School Marching Band. I am from Blythewood, South Carolina and attended the University of South Carolina where I earned my Bachelor of Music Education degree. During my time at USC, I was a member of the USC University Band, USC Symphonic Winds, and the USC Marching Band. I am the chairman for the new Lexington-Richland School District Five Honor band clinic. I am also currently principal saxophonist of the Carolina Wind Symphony. I completed my student teaching internship at Irmo Middle School and Irmo High School in Lexington-Richland School District Five. While completing my internship, I directed the combined middle and high school saxophone choir and was a guest conductor for the Irmo High School Chamber Winds at the SCBDA State Concert Festival.
While receiving my Bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina, my passion for the marching arts led me to being involved with South Carolina high school marching bands as a woodwind and visual instructor. I have served on the staff for the Blythewood High School Blue Legion Marching Band and the White Knoll High School Timberwolf Marching Pride. Most recently, I helped lead the Blythewood Blue Legion to their first Bands of America Regional Championship Finals appearance and a top five SCBDA AAAA State Finals finish during the 2017 season. While at White Knoll, I helped lead the White Knoll Band to two SCBDA State Finals appearances including the 2016 SCBDA AAAA State Championships and a top five finish in the 2015 SCBDA AAAAA State Championships. During 2015 season, the White Knoll Marching Band was also a Western Carolina Tournament of Champions class champion and finalist. During the 2015-2016 school year, I served as the Visual Caption Head for the White Knoll indoor percussion ensemble, leading them to a bronze medal finish at the 2016 SCBDA Winter Ensemble Championships.
Since being at Chapin Middle School, the Chapin Middle School Bands has already experiened lots of success. The Chapin Middle School Concert and Symphonic Bands both received ratings of Superior with Distinction at the 2019 SCBDA Concert Performance Assessment. In 2019, thirteen students were placed into the SCBDA All-Region Band being the most since 2015 and the first student was placed into the SCBDA All-State Band since 2016. The Chapin Middle School Band leadership team has been developed in which a selected group of students meet once a week to develop ideas and projects to promote positive growth of the program. The Chapin Middle School band was selected to be a part of the "Consortium for the Development of Quality Band Literature". The first ever Chapin Band night was held hosting all middle school students at a Chapin High School football game bringing in more than 85 students to participate. Several ensembles have been created including a brass choir and a pep band. The program has also merged with Chapin Intermediate School and Chapin High School to create one program under the same umbrella known as the Chapin Bands. Mr. Howell is excited for the future of the Chapin Band program including several facility upgrades as well as new performance opportunities coming later in the school year.
My professional affiliations include the South Carolina Band Director's Association in which I was recently elected to serve on the SCBDA Marching Band Committee representing the state of South Carolina, the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the South Carolina Music Educators Association (SCMEA), the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA), and the Carolina Winter Ensemble Association (CWEA).
I am excited for my first year with the Chapin Band program!
