Mr. Justin Thomas

Hello,

My name is Justin Thomas and I am the new principal of CrossRoads.  I have been in education for 12 years as a middle school science teacher in Lancaster County and Dutch Fork Middle here in Lexington Richland School District 5, a DIS at DFMS, and an administrator at Dutch Fork High School.  My undergraduate degree is actually a BS in Earth Science with a concentration in Meteorology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (2004). My first job post graduation was as a meteorologist/weather producer for NBC.  However, during this time my passion for teaching and education really began to shine as I was always teaching, training, and leading others. That is when I decided to go through the PACE program to become a teacher. From there I have earned my M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Winthrop University (2012) to lead me on the path I currently am on. I have a wife, who is an elementary art teacher, and a daughter that is the love of my life.  This is going to be a great year here at CrossRoads! I welcome everyone to enjoy the journey we will be on together.

Welcome!  I can’t believe this is my 24th  year as an educator in District 5!  Thirteen of those years were spent teaching pre-algebra here at CrossRoads, and I am currently in my 5th year as an administrator.  I received my B.A. in Elementary Education from Clemson University and my M.Ed in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina. I am also a National Board certified teacher in Early Adolescent Mathematics.  I love spending time with my family.  My husband and I are proud parents of two awesome boys, Coleman and Brock.  In my spare time, I enjoy cooking and gardening.  I look forward to an amazing year with your children!

Hello!  My name is Anita Vogel Long and I have worked in public education at the middle-school level for 37 years. I graduated from the University of Georgia in 1978 with a Bachelor of Music degree, and taught music for 2 years in Macon, Georgia.  The following five years, I taught in the beautiful state of New Jersey.  There, I developed and implemented a Performing Arts Program that included acting, singing, dancing and creative writing for 7th and 8th grade students.  In 1985, I moved to sunny South Carolina and implemented the Performing Arts Program at Irmo Middle School for 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th graders.  In 1993, I earned my Master of Education degree with a focus in Gifted Education, from Converse College.  Continuing to challenge myself professionally, I earned my Certificate of Administration in 2003 from the University of South Carolina, and began working at CrossRoads Middle/Intermediate School as Assistant Principal of Student Services.

For over thirty years, I have truly enjoyed serving the students of District 5 and being a part of such an excellent school district!  Both my son and daughter received a strong educational foundation attending District Five Schools.  They went on to attend Clemson University, and now have successful careers in Seattle, Washington.

My husband and I enjoy outdoor activities, eating out with good friends and of course traveling to Seattle to see our children and 3 grandsons.

I am looking forward to an exciting school year and the opportunity to “cherish and challenge” our new CrossRoads Cougars!

Hi, my name is Michael Carothers and I am looking forward to a new opportunity this year at CrossRoads Intermediate School. Although this is my first year as an Assistant Principal, this is my 11th year at CrossRoads and 21st year working with students. I taught science for 10 years in California before moving to District 5. At CrossRoads, I taught science for seven years and then served the school as the Digital Integration Specialist for the last three. I earned my B.A. degrees in English and Biology from Sonoma State University in California and an M.Ed in Education Technology from the University of South Carolina. My wife, daughter, and I have enjoyed the move to South Carolina and love having time to spend with family and friends (and two very energetic dogs)! We have incredible teachers and students here at CrossRoads and I am happy to have this opportunity to support our school.
