Mrs. Akhira Jeter

Greetings Chapin parents, guardians, and students! I am originally from Brooklyn, NY though I have lived and received much of my formal dance training in Columbia, SC at the Palmetto Center for the Arts under the direction of Dr. Anne S. Richardson. I have trained internationally in Kiev, Ukraine, competed in the Youth American Grand Prix, performed in the American College Dance Festival, participated in residencies featuring Rennie Harris, Campaigne De Jean-Rene Delsion, David Dorfman Dance, and performed in the professional works of both the Sean Curran and the Urban Bush Woman Dance company. I have taught, choreographed, and coached in national award winning studios, dance intensives, and non-profit arts programs for over 9 years. I am a certified K-12 Dance Educator receiving my Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance Performance and Choreography from Coker University where I danced and cheered collegiality. I am well versed in many forms of movement, but I especially enjoy afro-jazz, weight lifting, classical ballet, and acrobatic arts. Upon graduating college, I married my husband Joshua Jeter and moved to Manhattan, NY where I performed professionally whith multiple dance companies before returning to SC to pursue my passion of teaching dance in public education. My approach to the classroom setting encourages self-efficacy, critical thinking, artistic expression, and community. I have dedicated the past 3 years teaching dance in public education and now proudly serve as the first educator to make dance education accessible to all students at both Chapin Middle and Chapin High School.
