Message from JoAnn:
I want to thank all of you for allowing me to take care of your precious children. I would like to explain the purpose of the health room. I am a Registered Nurse and am at school to help manage chronic health conditions, treat acute injuries that happen at school, and assess for illnesses that are too severe or contagious for a student to stay at school. My goal is to help students learn to successfully manage their health and educations, as the two are integrally linked. I work as part of our educational team to meet this goal.
I am not allowed to diagnose or prescribe a treatment plan for students. For that reason, I am not allowed to see or treat pre-existing injuries. This is a mandate from the district for the safety of all involved. If you feel your child may have a serious injury, PLEASE take them to a health care provider. If the provider rules out a fracture and recommends intermittent ice, please bring something written by him/her stating how often the ice should be used and the duration (i.e. 1 day, 1 week, etc.). If you feel strongly it is not a fracture and want to send a parent note requesting ice for one day following the injury, you may do so. If pain and swelling persists after this, we will strongly encourage you to take your student to the doctor to rule out a serious injury. If you choose this option, please make sure they have gotten appropriate treatment at home just before coming to school (over-the-counter pain medication if desired and ice) so they do not have to miss more instructional time than necessary. Please keep in mind school staff is never allowed to remove or replace splints or wraps.
If your child tells you he/she does not feels well, please check his/her temperature at home and proceed accordingly. If your child has a new medical diagnosis or you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. If you need resources to be able to take your child to the doctor, please contact me. We would be happy to help in any way we can. We are passionate about getting our students resources they need to do their best at school and in life. Thanks so much!
