Mrs. Kristen Burry
Hi, I'm Mrs. Burry and I teach Learning Strategies and English here at Irmo High School. This is my first year at Irmo High School, but I spent the last 3 years working in the district at Leaphart Elementary School. I am looking forward to creating a positive and student-centered community in my classroom, building relationships with each of my students, and collaborating with families to best meet the needs of every learner.
I am blessed to have an amazing husband and 3 awesome teenage boys. Together, we enjoy watching TV and movies, sports, travelling anywhere we have never been, and spending time on the water.
I do not take my responsibility as an educator lightly, and I believe that learning stems from relationships and it is my job to make sure each of my students feel valued and challenged in a way that creates opportunities for success. The core of my mindset on my role as an educator comes from a book by Haim Ginott called Teacher and Child: A Book for Parents and Teachers. "I have come to the frightenting conclusion that I am the decisive element. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. I possess tremendous power to make life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis is escalated or de-escalated, and a person is humanized or de-humanized. If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming." (Ginott)
