Chapin High School Student Government wins national award

IRMO – Chapin High School’s Student Government was named America’s Best Student Government by Varsity Brands during the 2019 Varsity Brands Awards show held Saturday, May 11 at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL.

Varsity Brands created the national Spirit Awards four years ago to celebrate schools, individuals and organizations who work to increase school pride and spirit. Awards are given out in 25 categories.  Nominations were submitted in the fall of the academic year, which include a 500 word essay, recommendations, photos and press releases.  Chapin High School Student Government was selected as one of the six 2019 finalists nationwide in February, recognizing their efforts to bring students together, enhance school pride and elevate the overall student experience.

"This recognition is a tribute to the hard work of current and former students who dreamed of creating the ultimate "spirit experience" at Chapin High School,” said Billie Williams, Chapin High School Student Government sponsor.  “This year we have a 54-member council who are enrolled in the Student Government/Leadership courses. This group of individuals have truly worked to provide an environment which promotes school pride and spirit throughout the halls of Chapin High School."

“Varsity Brands is dedicated to recognizing the motivated, engaged and passionate individuals who ensure that school spirit remains a priority in school communities,” added Nicole Lauchaire, Executive Director of the Varsity Brands School Spirit Awards. “These unsung heroes are absolutely essential to reinforcing the strong correlation between school spirit, involvement, achievement and self-confidence.  We are honored to recognize them and their positive contributions across the country.”

Chapin’s High’s Student Government will receive a $3,000 prize which will be used in planning school spirit events in the fall.

“We are incredibly proud of our student government for being named the best student government in the nation,” said Chapin High principal Michael Ames.  “It is wonderful that the hard work and tireless effort by Ms. Williams, Mr. Mize and their students have been recognized. It is a well-deserved honor, as the tradition of excellence continues at Chapin High School.”
