School District Five student featured in STEM Premier Top 100 rankings

IRMO – Dutch Fork High School rising senior Joshua Coleman has been named to STEM Premier’s Top 100.

STEM Premier is an online solution that assists students in designing a career pathway, educators in recruiting top talent to their schools, and employers in developing a stable, continuous talent pipeline. Once a year, the website identifies the top academic and technical high school students and recognizes their accomplishments, talents and efforts.

“It is an absolute honor to be recognized on this list of students that share the same passion in STEM areas that I have,” Coleman said.

Coleman became involved with STEM Premier his sophomore year when a teacher encouraged him and classmates to join the platform as a means of displaying their passions in STEM fields.

“Being a student at Dutch Fork, I have been fortunate to have been exposed to all four components of STEM,” Coleman said. “It is difficult for me to narrow down a favorite area because I really enjoy science, computers, engineering and math altogether. The STEM program at Dutch Fork does a great job of overlapping these content areas across many classes.”

This year, over 170,000 STEM Premier students from over 19,000 different high schools competed for a spot in the STEM Premier Top 100, making this accomplishment a testament to the selected students’ academic, technical and extracurricular endeavors.

“What a remarkable achievement for Joshua to be recognized nationally by STEM Premier,” said Dutch Fork High principal Dr. Gerald Gary. “This is a true testament to how dedicated he is in the classroom and ultimately what we strive for all of our students here at Dutch Fork High School. We take pride in our STEM offerings and are thrilled to have Joshua represent us!”

Making the STEM Premier Top 100 is not an easy task. Over 30 different aspects of these students’ accomplishments and experiences are taken into account and compared against tens of thousands of other high school students on STEM Premier.

“School District Five has long placed priority on offering our students the best education anywhere, and we continue to see them raise the bar every year,” said Superintendent Dr. Christina Melton. “We congratulate Joshua for being recognized as a top STEM student in the country!”
