Chapin Middle School named finalist for Riley Award for SIC excellence

IRMO – Chapin Middle School’s School Improvement Council (SIC) has been named one of five finalists for the 2020 South Carolina Riley Award for SIC Excellence.

The award was created in 2002 to recognize the significant contributions made to public education by nearly 13,000 local SIC members who volunteer in the state’s 1,100-plus K-12 public schools.

“I am so excited for our SIC to be named a finalist for this award,” said Chapin Middle School principal Anna Miller.  “Chapin Middle School has a strong history of parent and community involvement, and this year's council is honored to represent the hard work we have all done to make Chapin Middle School a place where all students are safe, happy, and learning.”

Chapin Middle’s SIC has sustained several initiatives over the years, maintaining an emphasis on educating students and parents. The SIC initiatives include educating students on issues related to social media helping them learn to use it responsibly.  The SIC hosted a parent information session and student assembly organized with Joe Ryan, education coordinator at the South Carolina Office of the Attorney General. Anti-bullying lessons along with lessons on positive digital citizenship are provided through Google Classroom on a monthly basis to all Chapin Middle students and faculty.

“These five School Improvement Councils have demonstrated outstanding work on behalf of their school communities,” said SC-SIC Board of Trustees Chair Dora Leonard. “We congratulate them on their efforts in supporting the impact that parents, educators, and community members can make together for their schools and students.”

The winner of this year’s Riley Award will be selected from this year’s finalists by an independent panel of reviewers and announced during the 2020 SC-SIC annual meeting on April 4.

The SC-SIC Riley Award for SIC Excellence is named in honor of former SC Governor and US Education Secretary Richard Riley and his late wife, Tunky, and recognizes the couple’s longstanding commitment to quality public education.
