School District Five educator receives statewide honor

IRMO School District Five physical education teacher, Carmen Plemmons, has received an Honor Award for 2022 by the South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD).

The Honor Award is the highest award given by SCAHPERD and they give out two annually. Its purpose is to honor a member who is known for high professional and personal standards and performance and is a role model for students, clients and colleagues.

“I am humbled and grateful to be recognized by the South Carolina Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD) as an Honor Award recipient,” Plemmons said. “I am thankful for the support of the Lake Murray Elementary School Administration, School District Five Physical Education Professionals, and the School District Five District Office in understanding the importance of physical activity and the value to a well-rounded healthy student/staff and community.  My goal is to keep championing for continued opportunities for our families to learn and grow through movement locally and throughout the great state of South Carolina."

Plemmons is in her 35th year of teaching physical education and her 16th year at Lake Murray Elementary School. She earned her bachelor’s of science degree in physical education from Appalachian State University.

“After working with Carmen Plemmons for almost a decade, I can confidently share that she is a dedicated, passionate, and highly-qualified professional,” Lake Murray Elementary Principal Kelly Reese said. “Watching her in action never ceases to amaze me.  Her instruction and engagement of students is always grounded in real-world application.  When she isn't teaching, she can often be found on the recess playground engaging with students and ensuring safe play. We are grateful for the expertise, professionalism, and collaboration Mrs. Plemmons brings not only to our school but also to the teaching profession.”

The South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD) is the only association for professionals involved in health, physical, and dance education, in South Carolina. Members are current, retired, or future professionals who work in schools, higher education, community organizations, government and non-government organizations.
