School District Five celebrates service with annual Community Involvement Celebration

IRMO – School business partners, mentors, volunteers, and parent-teacher organizations gathered at Seven Oaks Park on April 11 to be honored and celebrated as an integral part of the success of Lexington-Richland School District Five.

Superintendent Dr. Christina Melton said, "Our volunteers are an instrumental part of our success story. They connect with our students. They connect with our teachers. They are an extension from the community into our schools and by having them in our schools and having them visible, we are able to reach so many more students and change so many trajectories of lives because in a positive way they contribute to our story."

District schools nominate one group or person for each category. Categories include: Outstanding Volunteer, Outstanding Volunteer Group, Outstanding Business Partner, Outstanding Mentor and Outstanding PTO. Awards are given to each school level in each category: elementary, intermediate/middle and high school.

Betsy Bryant received the Outstanding Volunteer Award in the high school category for her service to Irmo High School. Bryant is a member of the Irmo High School PTSO, secretary of the Yellow Jacket Club and the Irmo Education Foundation, while also working concession for football and basketball games. She organizes events like the Senior Leadership Breakfast, Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, The Cookie Walk and more.

Upon receiving recognition, Bryant said, “I am very honored to be able to be high school volunteer for the district. I know so many people and how much they volunteer at their schools and it's just an honor that I get to represent Irmo High School."

Prisma Health received the Outstanding Business Partner Award in the intermediate/middle school category for Chapin Middle School. Regina Brown, Community and Government Relations manager from Prisma Health, accepted the award highlighting the partnership which provides pedometers and hand sanitizers to encourage healthy habits of teachers and proper hygiene to prevent illness. Also through this relationship, the Chapin Middle School Student Improvement Council Technology team will be able to focus on reducing the dependence on mobile devices encouraging students to rest during key sleeping times.

Brown said, "I have to say that I was truly shocked this morning. I know that we do a lot with District Five, but it's an honor to work at Prisma Health, but it's more of an honor to give back to the community and work with Chapin Middle School."

CrossRoads Intermediate PTO received the Outstanding PTO Award in the intermediate/middle school category for CrossRoads Intermediate School. Through the hard work of the PTO at CrossRoads, the school increased teacher morale and parent involvement which has provided the opportunity for the PTO to host a welcome back breakfast for teachers, sponsor a field day and fully fund the supplies needed for STEAM Clubs that occur on early release days.

Barbara Graham and Becky Reid accepted the award for the CrossRoads Intermediate PTO. Graham said, “It means a lot because we've put in a lot of hard work with getting volunteers and more importantly raising funds to help support the school so it really means a lot to have your efforts rewarded."
