Communications Regarding Health Concerns and Proactive Steps
As concerns over the Coronavirus (COVID-19) grow nationwide and globally, we wanted to communicate with parents about the steps School District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties are taking as we prepare, take proactive steps and remain watchful regarding this evolving worldwide health issue.
When health-related issues occur, school districts work directly with DHEC
The Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) via the State School Nurse Consultants Office has provided updated guidance for schools/districts across South Carolina on the Coronavirus.
Accordingly, DHEC's guidance is inclusive of background information regarding the virus; prevention recommendations for students, staff and parents; as well as helpful tips for travel before and/or following visits to impacted areas.
Currently, there is a comprehensive list of resources available to schools/districts across South Carolina should students and/or staff display signs and symptoms of exposure to COVID-19 following travel to those areas.
At this time, the primary thing to remember and advise is that travel from China whether it be Chinese nationals or US citizens/residents is being controlled and persons are being screened and quarantined as appropriate. This is an evolving virus and situation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will advise DHEC if any changes are required, and they will update their guidance to districts.
We will take appropriate action based upon guidance received
For now, we are urging that parents, staff and students follow the same precautions we take during any other health-related issue. Hand washing, keeping students home from school with fever, and communicating with our school nurses continue to be key to curbing the spread of all contagious illnesses.
DHEC and the state Department of Education have shared links to resources with school districts statewide. Please see the links below for outreach materials and information:
Additional information is available on DHEC’s website at www.scdhec.gov/covid19. We appreciate your support in helping us prepare and remain vigilant against the spread of all illnesses in our schools.
